Description
Tintern Abbey is North of Chepstow, Monmouthshire, south Wales
It was founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow in 113.
A colony of monks was provided by l'Aumône in Chartres, the daughter house of the Burgundian mother house of Cîteaux
It was only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain, and the first in Wales.
It's situated on the the Welsh side of the River Wye
It inspired many artists to write or paint :
William Wordsworth's poem "Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey"
Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem "Tears, Idle Tears
Allen Ginsberg's "Wales Visitation"
and more than one painting by JMW Turner
